If laughter is indeed the best medicine, then FST’s resident Improv team is fully stocked. FST Improv returns this spring with Triple Play, a special improv showcase specifically designed to entertain from a distance.
Beginning March 20, three improvisers, an emcee, and an improvisational musician to provide comedic accompaniment, will each return to the FST stage. Like our year-round Improv shows, these improvisers will draw inspiration from audience suggestions to perform games, scenes, and songs – all made up completely on the spot. This time, however, the artists will take on an additional challenge: they must stay six feet apart from their fellow cast members at all times.
“It was certainly a creative challenge to reimagine our show” said Director of Improv, Will Luera. “But as Improvisers, we don’t shy away from creative challenges…we lean into them! So, we broke out our measuring tape and artistically engineered a way we could perform on the Keating Theatre stage and still serve our loyal audience with the art form they love.”
FST Improv Founder Rebecca Hopkins returns to the stage as the show’s emcee.
“It has been very exciting to return to the Improv stage with Triple Play after a five year hiatus – to take on the challenge of finding joy again,” said Hopkins. “Laughing at our foibles is part of being a community. Comedy has a unique ability to bring people together. And after being apart for so long, we could all use a good group laugh. Zoom is great, but it can’t give you that feeling of an audience sharing a collective ‘Aha!’ moment.”
FST’s cast of resident improvisers are eager to reconnect with audiences.
“I hope our patrons are as excited as we are to come together again to do live theater and create laughs in a new, safe way,” said Luera.
Fellow cast member Sarah Durham agrees. “I’m looking forward to having laughing, smiling faces in front of us again. If we can provide someone with a joyful escape, even for an hour, I’ll be happy. The heart of comedy is optimism and joy – both things we can use extra doses of right now.”
