Love karaoke? Love improv? Musical improv troupe Happy Karaoke Fun Time blends the two to create a completely original, never before seen musical on the spot. Instead of a piano, they use karaoke tracks and improvise entirely new lyrics to some of today’s most popular songs.
We sat down with Philip Markle, Creator of Happy Karaoke Fun Time, to get to know the group better before they make their Festival debut.

How long has your group been around?
The group has been around for 6 years now in New York City, and 4 years before that in Chicago!
What is your troupe best at/known for?
We bring karaoke songs the audience knows and loves to life with new lyrics that pay homage to the original. Audiences go gaga when Gaga comes on and we’re making up new words to fit the context of the musical they led us to create!
This is your group’s first time at the Sarasota Improv Festival. What have you learned from some of your other performances?
We’ve loved touring at colleges and adjusting our tracks to play the current hits the youth of today love. It forces us to not have outdated musical taste!
Why should someone come to this year’s 11th Annual Sarasota Improv Festival?
The Festival is a collection of some of the greatest improv troupes in the USA at a celebrated festival that everyone within the industry knows is one of the BEST!
Can you describe your favorite improv scene that you’ve ever done in 11 words?
Jesus came back to high school prom and made everything better.
The thing you can never forget about improvisers is: we are having as much as as it looks like we are having.
I love Sarasota audiences even more than I love: Tampa audiences.
I have no idea what will happen at the 11th Annual Sarasota Improv Fest, but I do know for sure that: there will be laughs galore and you will have the time of your life.
